Chernobyl: What has happened since Russian military seized the facility

On the first day of the war in Ukraine, Russian military seized the infamous Chernobyl powerplant, the site of the worst nuclear disaster in history in 1986.

Since, there has been little information released regarding the 300 workers believed to be trapped at the site.

On Monday 7th March 2022, we finally heard about the horrendous conditions the workers are facing whilst having to continue to safely maintain the site under Russian authority.

100 workers and 200 Ukrainian security guards are believed to be trapped inside the plant, unable to leave and with little communication with the outside world.

Although the atmosphere is said to have remained calm, we now know that workers are surviving off limited food and sleep; things that are essential to ensure that workers are safely able to operate the plant.

With only one bowl of porridge a day and an estimated 2 hours of sleep, workers have split themselves into rotational groups to enable each person to rest as much as they can. Some sleep on camp beds, others sleep on the hard floor or tables.

It is also believed that some workers require medication, which is also limited.

A plan has yet to be made to rescue the workers, which includes cooks, guards, scientists and technicians.
