Russia invades Ukraine: Day 13 Live Updates

13 days ago, Russia began a war that would see unimaginable, horrific scenes take place. From children murdered, to heroic soldiers fighting back, and a fearless leader showing the world that Ukraine are a force to be reckoned with. 11.35 p.m: Olena Zelenskyy pens open letter to the Global Media.

8.21 p.m: 3,500 civilians evacuated from Sumy.

8.19 p.m: 27 killed in Kharkiv.


At least 27 civilians have been killed in Kharkiv, according to Ukrainian police. In total, 170 people including 5 children are believed to have been killed in the region since the beginning of the war. 7.00 p.m: President Zelenskyy makes history with powerful speech to the UK House of Commons

5.49 p.m: 4,000 Russian troops killed.


Between 2,000 - 4,000 Russian troops have been killed so far in Ukraine, according to the director of the CIA.

Ukrainian officials believe the number is closer to 12,000.


Russian officials are heavily downplaying the number of casualties they have suffered, claiming only 498 deaths among its forces.


5.28 p.m: Central hospital in Kharkiv destroyed.

4.48 p.m: Memorial service for fallen Ukrainian soldiers.

In the city of Lviv, a memorial service has been held for two fallen Ukrainian soldiers who were killed on Wednesday.

4.34 p.m: Celebrity donations pour in.

Countless celebrities have donated money to help Ukraine, with David and Victoria Beckham being the latest- donating £1,000,000 to the emergency UNICEF appeal.

4.32 p.m: Norwegians join fight


Ukraine’s ambassador to Norway has revealed that between 100 and 150 Norwegians and either in or on their way to Ukraine, to help fight against Russia.


4.30 p.m: Video shows aftermath of Russian air strikes in the Sumy region.


4.23 p.m: Photo shows moment Ukrainian couple say goodbye to their children as they leave to defend Kyiv.



4.18 p.m: 720 people evacuated through humanitarian corridor.

A total of 723 people have been evacuated today through the Sumy humanitarian corridor, RIA has reported.

11.30 a.m: Ambulances and hospitals targeted


Attacks on ambulances and hospitals are ’increasing quite rapidly’, according to WHO. It is understood that medical supples, such as oxygen, insulin and PPE are running low in Ukraine.

11.00 a.m: Ukraine death toll


A total of 474 civilians, including 38 children, have been killed since the start of the war. A further 861 people have been injured.

2.49 a.m: UK Visa total revealed


A total of 300 visas have been issued to Ukrainians by the Home Office, it has been revealed.

2.46 a.m: Condition of captured Chernobyl workers revealed

2.21 a.m: Russian military leader declared dead.


A top Russian military leader has been declared dead, after fighting near Kharkiv also saw numerous senior Russian officers killed and wounded. Russian officials are yet to comment on the situation, but the death was confirmed by Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence Intelligence Service.



Vitaly Gerasimov was a major general, chief of staff and first deputy commander of the 41st Army of the Central Military District of Russia.


2.06 a.m: Parts of Ukraine without power


Over 742,000 Ukrainians are believed to be without electricity across the country, Ukraine’s Minister of Energy has said.

2.00 a.m: Zelenskyy addresses the nation


President Zelenskyy has addresed the nation, revealing that he is still in Kyif and has no plans to flee the capitol.


In the south of our country, such a national movement has unfolded, such a powerful manifestation of Ukrainian-ness that we have never seen in the streets and squares there. And for Russia it is like a nightmare.
They forgot that we are not afraid of paddy wagons and batons. We are not afraid of tanks and machine guns. When the main thing is on our side, truth - as it is now. I stay here in Kyiv, at Bankova Street. I don't hide and I'm not afraid of anyone. (I will stay here) as long as it's necessary to win in our patriotic war.
We will talk. We will insist on talks until we find a way to tell our people: that's how we will reach peace."

1.57 a.m: 1.7 million people have officially fled Ukraine, the UN says.

1.50 a.m: The murderous plan behind the humanitarian corridors


Humanitarian corridors, that had been prepared by Russia military, were meant to see thousands of civilians safely flee the war. We have since learned that the safe route, was in-fact full of planted mines with the intention of seeing innocent men, women and children murdered.
